London boasts some truly world-class examples of architecture from the Art Deco period (c.1908-1935). Fans of this style can now live in some of the city's finest examples of this design movement, including the recently-refurbished Hoover Building in Perivale.
Lavish London
Taking its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925, Art Deco is characterised by stylised geometric forms, lavish materials, exotic influences and fine craftsmanship. Eltham Palace (above, bottom right) and the Daily Express Building (below, bottom right and left) are two of London's most exquisite examples of the style.
Historic Eltham Palace was remodelled in 1933 by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld, with sumptuous Art Deco interiors created by Scandinavian designer Rolf Engströmer. The Daily Express Building on Fleet Street is now the London Headquarters of Goldman Sachs. The little-used entrance lobby of the Grade II-listed structure is a spectacular display of silver and gilt designs by architect Robert Atkinson and plaster reliefs by sculptor Eric Aumonier.
The Hoover Building, Perivale, UB6
The Hoover Building was built in 1933 by the same architectural firm that designed Victoria Coach Station and the Firestone Factory in Brentford. Wallis, Gilbert and Partners created the palatial building as the American firm Hoover's UK headquarters, housing 600 staff at its easily-accessible location just off the A40.
Acquired in 2015, the former factory has been sympathetically developed into 66 luxury apartments. Historic design details have been carefully preserved, with contemporary features added to complement and enhance the original aesthetic of the building.
