The Downsview Players presents the hilarious comedy, Mark Evans' Bleak Expectations on May 15, 16 and 17, 2025 in Upper Norwood, SE19. Bleak Expectations is a riotous slapstick parody of Charles Dickens greatest works. This is the story Dickens might have written after drinking too much gin. Join Pip, his sisters Pippa and Poppy, and his best friend Harry Biscuit, as they attempt to evade the dastardly Mr Benevolent, defeat the Hardthrasher siblings, and vanquish evil with virtue! This amateur production of Bleak Expectations is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.

The Council of Christians and Jews South East London Branch are presenting an evening with Harry Freedman. The singer and poet Leonard Cohen was deeply learned in Judaism and Christianity, the spiritual traditions that underpinned his self-identity and the way he made sense of the world. In Leonard Cohen: Mystival Roots of Genius, Harry Freedman, a leading author of cultural and religious history, explores the mystical and spiritual sources Cohen drew upon, discusses their original context and the stories and ideas behind them. Explore your funny side this Spring! This is an invitation for you to step into the world of clown training, in a fun and informative taster clown workshop. The workshop will run for around 2 hours, and will introduce you to some basic clown concepts such as Clocking, and Le Jeu (Playing the Game). Through fun exercises and games, and youll gain an embodied experience of playing for an audience. Suitable for all levels, whether you have a performance background or not. About the facilitator: Artie discovered theatrical clown a decade ago, and spent years travelling to clown masters around the UK and Europe. He was mentored in workshop facilitation by Arne Pohlmeier (Two Gents Productions/The Globe), and is a guest lecturer at the London College of Music and London Southbank University.

Tickets can be reserved online for £12 (plus ticket agent fee) until 7pm on the day of the show. Door price tickets are £15. PLEASE NOTE: We are an intimate boutique comedy theatre bar, so TICKET HOLDERS MUST ARRIVE BEFORE 7.45 in order to get your drinks and be seated for the smooth running of the show and everyone's enjoyment. Anyone arriving after 8pm will interrupt the show and may be turned away. SEATING IS FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVED, so early arrival is recommended. The residents, staff and guests at Downturn Abbey are assembled for the annual Spring Ball when the host, Lord Black, is discovered in his library, dead! Everyone is under suspicion; but are they all who or what they seem to be? It's up to Inspector Brown and trusty sidekick Sergeant Grey to uncover the secrets behind the facades and identify the killer! This musical comedy is packed full of well known theatre and pop songs, and features a cast drawn from the tradition of the 1930s golden age murder mystery, including snooty aristocrats, respectable clergy, learned academics and disgruntled servants.
