Join us for a special evening honouring the life and legacy of Athol Fugard (11 June 1932 – 8 March 2025), South Africa’s Lifetime Achievement Tony Award-winning playwright and a towering figure in world theatre. The Royal Court’s relationship with Fugard began over half a century ago, in 1973, when the theatre proudly presented the international premieres of his groundbreaking anti-apartheid plays — Sizwe Banzi is Dead, The Island, and Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act. Sizwe Banzi and The Island later transferred to Broadway, where co-creators and performers John Kani OBE and Zakes Mokae were awarded Best Actor Tony Awards. Hosted by David Byrne, Artistic Director of the Royal Court, and curated by Greg Karvellas, former Artistic Director of The Fugard Theatre in Cape Town (2010–2021), this celebration will feature John Kani OBE, Dame Janet Suzman, and others on stage, with reflections, live performance extracts, and recorded excerpts from Athol Fugard himself. Tickets are £5 and available through the Royal Court website, including a post-show toast with a glass of South African wine and — for meat eaters — biltong, two of Athol’s favourites. City and Colour is the recording alias for Juno Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green, who was also the guitarist and vocalist of the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. He plays melodic acoustic and folk music and is often accompanied by a rotating number of Canadian indie rock musicians, such as Daniel Romano and Spencer Burton of Attack in Black. The name City and Colour comes from his own name: Dallas, a city, and Green, a colour. His reasoning for the name was that he felt queasy "putting the album out under the name Dallas Green". Green said that he had been writing material since he was around the age of 14. Regarding the songs released on his first album, Sometimes, Green said that he had been writing material for it as early as when he was 16 years old, and finished writing songs for it in 2005.

This is a unique opportunity to take part in a day of uplifting choral singing under the baton of one of the UK’s most cherished composers who celebrates his 80th birthday this year. Sir John Rutter will lead singers through some of his best-loved compositions, a brand new work and pieces by other composers that he has chosen for the occasion. Singers of all ages and experience are welcome (age guidance 16 upwards), although the day will be geared to those who have at least some choral experience and music-reading ability. We’ll sing the music just for fun, no advance preparation is expected and no performance is given at the end of the day. The pace will be relaxed and informal, John will share some stories from his extraordinary career and you’ll pick up some vocal tips along the way. Registration from 10am
