We begin our Déjà Vu live programme with Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms: a work of spiritual awakening like no other, uniquely arranged for piano-four hands by Shostakovich. Maki Namekawa, much beloved by Bold Tendencies as by audiences around the world, returns to open the season; joined by her husband Dennis Russell Davies, eminent pianist, conductor and chamber musician. Speaking to reverence, rituals and natural cycles, this first event includes UK premieres of works written specially for this most spectacular double act - Keith JarrettRitual (performed in honour of his 80th birthday), and Philip GlassFour Movements for Two Pianos - as well as The Seasons by John Cage, the composer’s tribute to Native American thinking about the year’s cycle of time. Forming a Piano Duo in 2003, Maki Namekawa & Dennis Russell Davies have appeared together across the world with their unique musical sensibility and uncompromising commitment to excellence, including the premiere of many new works and commissions by the leading composers of our contemporary moment. Following Maki Namekawa’s extraordinary performances here in previous years (the complete Philip Glass Piano Etudes for our “Crisis” season in 2023 and her rendering of Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert for “Communion” in 2024), we are excited to welcome the Namekawa-Davies-Duo to open the Concrete Concert Hall with a double dream of piano for Déjà Vu in 2025. Have you ever wondered what our dreams and imagination can say about our inner psychology? Join us for an illuminating introduction to the psychology of Carl Jung and his groundbreaking ideas about the creative, healing power of the unconscious. A founding father of depth psychology, Jung was a maverick thinker, artist and visionary whose ideas were ahead of his time. His extensive studies of ancient religions and mythologies, alongside his deep dream work, brought him to the edge of sanity. In this talk, we’ll explore key Jungian concepts in relation to how Jung combined ancient Eastern wisdom with Western psychology. We’ll learn how this can be understood as a form of ‘sacred science’ reflecting the spiritual crisis of late stage capitalism and how Jung’s thought places us inside a larger reality transcending space and time. We’ll look at the instrumental role of imagination, dreams and symbols in Jung’s approach to psychoanalysis, including his innovative technique of active imagination or ‘dreaming awake’. We’ll consider how Jung’s psychoanalysis is still relevant today as a powerful, transformative tool to access the unknown and facilitate creativity in support of both individual and collective growth. Dr Rachel Newsome is a Jungian-based writer and teacher. She holds a doctorate in applying Jungian psychoanalysis to creative writing and is the founder of Depth Writing With Dr Rachel, a holistic creative learning programme aimed at supporting transformational growth. Did you know that many emotions are processed in a specific part of the brain called the amygdala? This small almond-shaped structure plays a crucial role in processing emotional information and is especially active when we experience fear and anger. The way we feel emotions is also influenced by other parts of the brain - and includes our brains mapping emotions onto our bodies, and changes within our bodies - which is why we feel joy in our heart, or a sense of doom in our stomach. This talk will teach you the complex interplay between the different regions of the brain that give rise to our emotional experiences. Learn more about the science behind how our emotions are formed, how they impact our daily lives and how we can use this knowledge to regulate our emotions better. Professor Sophie Scott CBE is Director of the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London. She studies the neurobiology of human vocal communication, from speech and sound to social interactions and non verbal emotional expressions, such as laughter. Sophie has appeared on The One Show (BBC1) and Sunday Brunch (C4) multiple times among a slew of other TV appearances. Her TED talk ‘Why We Laugh’ has over 5 million views! Sophie is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Medical Science and has published over 130 scientific papers.
