Black and red are not just for Halloween

Widely celebrated as Halloween, the festival originated from the pagan festival of the dead called Samhain. Bonfires and fireworks were originally made to ward-off evil spirits and it is celebrated in some quarters as the turn of the Pagan New Year. With a bloodthirsty history, dungeons and gothic architecture throughout London, this week's design inspiration takes its lead from the upcoming Halloween period...

Long Ditton, Surrey

If you are one of those people who love to decorate your house in preparation for trick or treaters this house would be your dream. Pumpkins, scarecrows and all things spooky could be used to decorate the front of this property. Set in a wonderfully secluded location near Long Ditton in Surrey the exterior is wonderfully traditional, is Grade II listed and was designed by Thomas Henry Wilson back in 1931. Go through the large double front door only to find more fabulous features on the inside, such as eye-catching wood panelling and exposed beams throughout. And it doesn't stop there, with ornate bathrooms and multiple fireplaces the decadence continues. You would surely be thrilled with this `spooktacular' property. See the property in full.

Wandsworth

Scary film anyone? This cinema room is the perfect spot to hide under the blankets and get the full effects of the latest horror movie. This exciting Wandsworth house recently sold by Foxtons also features a fabulous 32ft kitchen and a rare 60ft long garden. Two large reception rooms as well as five bedrooms complete the property, all done to a modern, high-tech finish, providing you with plenty of options to hide away from the scary trick or treaters!

Camden

Or, if you don't celebrate Halloween and are simply looking for something cool and trendy, this flat perfectly demonstrates how dark features can be used to create a unique and edgy property. Accented with red fixtures, a matt black colour scheme has been used to create a quality finish. The bathroom shown above is minimalist in its design and perfectly executed with the red flowers creating a striking contrast with the black slate floors and ceilings. The rest of the property retains black features throughout, providing a really unique property in Camden.

Maida Vale

Would you have Twilight dreams of vampires in the night in this huge red and black bed? Or would you simply let yourself be swallowed up by the comforting red hues after a night out looking at the bonfires and fireworks displays over the Halloween period. This Maida Vale flat near Little Venice features this fantastically sumptuous bedroom adorned with red leather and cushions plus a stunning living room with a floor to ceiling canvas print of a view of Rio de Janeiro from Sugarloaf Mountain. A quirky venue in every sense. Recently sold by Foxtons, it is sure to turn a few heads!

Hampstead

And last, but not least, you could have Halloween parties a-plenty in the swanky black bar area of this four bedroom Hampstead house that sold through our Hampstead office recently. The black fixtures provide the perfect setting for entertaining guests over the Halloween period and yes, the duke box does work, maybe it plays The Monster Mash! Perhaps some design inspiration for next year?
