London homes with history

With London so rich in history, it isn’t surprising that there are plenty of hidden property gems for sale and to rent with a unique backstory. We’ve selected a few of our favourite properties that give a ‘home with character’ a whole new meaning.

Arlington Street, St James's, SW1

This luxurious three bedroom apartment benefits from not one, but two connections to famous figures in history, while its sumptuous surroundings would make it fit for royalty today.

The property is part of an award-winning development that was built on the site of the former home of Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Some of the original building's features have been included in the redevelopment, including the striking beams used in the master bedroom (above).

And if that wasn’t enough, the property has also been linked to Winston Churchill in his early years. This flat has certainly seen its share of political connections!

Maze Hill, Greenwich, SE10

This striking Grade I listed castle cannot fail to impress with its exceptionally grand exterior. The five bedroom house we have for sale occupies an entire wing of this building.

Built and designed by John Vanbrugh for his own family, the castle was fashioned in a medieval style in 1718. The house was donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund in 1920 to be used as a school for children of RAF personnel who lost their lives in service.

Royal Victoria Patriotic Building, Spencer Park, SW18

This striking Grade II listed Victorian gothic building was built in 1857, in which this impressive four bedroom apartment is set.

Funded by the Price Albert’s Royal Patriotic Fund, the building was intended for the education of three hundred orphan daughters of soldiers and marines who lost their lives in the Russian War. The building has now been restored to house flats and workshops, along with the inclusion of a bar and restaurant.

The flat comes with the use of the private residents’ courtyard garden, including a barbeque area that will surely be put to use in the coming warmer months.

Gunter Grove, Chelsea, SW10

And now for a property that has a far more recent famous connection: this sleek and stylish three bedroom maisonette is the former Chelsea home of the lead singer of the Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten.

The rock star owned the entire building – now converted into two flats – from 1978 to 1981 and entertained numerous celebrity figures here. The property has since been refurbished to a high standard with a number of luxurious touches, but still retains some original features.

Also included with this property is a fantastic private roof terrace with ample room for dining and chic styling, which is in keeping with the rest of the modern décor.
