After indulging over Christmas, January is the time to be good to your wallet, as well as your health. A welcome alternative to splashing out on a gym membership is parkrun, which hosts free 5km runs every Saturday at 9am across the UK. For those looking to feel the burn without breaking the bank, here’s a list of some of our favourite parkrun locations in Greater London.

North

Hampstead Heath provides a perfect setting for exercising while taking in stunning scenery. The historic London park covers 320 hectares and includes ponds, woodlands and open-air swimming pools for when the weather gets a bit warmer. The top of Parliament Hill (pictured above) is well worth pausing at to catch your breath and enjoy the far-reaching views.

East

Mile End Park was created on industrial land that was badly affected by World War II bombing, but you would never have guessed it from how it appears today. It includes a lake, a wind turbine and a climbing wall that's well worth a go if you can muster any energy after your run.

South

Crystal Palace Park is an English Grade II listed site that was originally home to Sir Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace. Complete with statues of dinosaurs, an animal farm and a maze, the park is a striking setting for a morning run and exploring it after you’ve crossed the finish line is certainly time well spent.

West

Being the largest of London’s eight Royal Parks, Richmond Park covers an area of 2,500 acres. Being classed as a National Nature Reserve, one of its many desirable features is the beautiful Isabella Plantation – a 40 acre woodland garden. Richmond Park is probably most renowned though for its herds of deer that will provide a welcome distraction as you make it around the course!
