With so much happening in the world of interior design, it’s hard to know exactly how to style your home to stay ahead of the trends.
So, we've spoken to one of Britain’s leading textile designers, Clarissa Hulse, to find out what the interior trends are for 2017 and where homeowners should be prioritising their spend when it comes to styling their properties.
What has influenced your designs in your 2017 collections?
"My eclectic background and living in numerous countries has had a huge influence on my approach to colour and design throughout the years.
I am inspired by nature – the evolution of plants, the different seasons and the wonderful colours they bring. This has hugely inspired my work for 2017."
What is this year's ‘in' colour?
Clarissa Hulse, textile designer
"Green is very on trend this year – it is a fantastic colour and I love using it, as both a neutral and a statement by itself. There are so many beautiful shades and they all look great in contrast with other colours.
Greens and blues are a great place to start when adding colour to your home – I find them very calming and easy to live with."
What is 2017's must-have home accessory?
"I personally love cushions – you can never have too many and they are great for adding texture and colour to a room."
If you had £100 to spend on a room makeover, how would you spend it?
"Depending on which room you want to update, you can use £100 for a number of updates around the house.
As I mentioned before, cushions are such a great home accessory. If you want to add a splash of colour, or you’re keen to incorporate a new trend into your home, cushions are great for updating your living area or bedroom with minimal effort.
But if you’re looking to make a bigger impact, why not spend it on wallpaper and add a feature wall in your home.
New towels are great for updating your bathroom scheme, and bright kitchen textiles can help add a new colour to your kitchen. There are many ways you can use £100 to update your home, don’t be afraid to be creative."
Any additional advice on how to style a home?
"I have an obsession with colour – it is definitely the hallmark of my work.
"If you’re looking to make a bigger impact, why not spend on wallpaper"
My advice on choosing and mixing colours for your home, as a general rule, is that I would limit its use to around three. A neutral base is a good place to start, then you can build up the look from there.
Choose a beautiful fabric for your curtains and base your palette around these colours to keep your look cohesive.
Add splashes throughout the room with accessories in your chosen hues. And I would also use different tones of the same colour to avoid your room becoming too matchy."
You can find Clarissa’s home accessories collections in department stores John Lewis and House of Fraser, as well as in her online shop.
