The interior design trends we've seen in 2018 will still remain current in the year ahead. But we’re predicting a move away from pinks, copper and marble towards an edgier, less feminine aesthetic that incorporates concrete, leather and unusual pastel tones that hark back to the colourful design schemes of the ‘70s.
2019 is the year that our love affair with grey and white will finally end and we’ll be falling head over heels for something a little bit softer, as our houses and flats finally become that little bit homelier once again – but of course, with a super-contemporary twist. Pastels
Grey is on the way out in 2019 and on the way in are daring pastel shades, which will give warmth to our homes in the year ahead. Pastel pinks have been an interior design staple for a while, but next year expect to see a wider spectrum of colours, such as yellows, peach tones and a modern take on avocado green. 2019 will be the year of welcoming colour back into our homes, with a revival of the 1970s love for everything pastel. Although we’re not sure pastel bathroom suites will be making a comeback anytime soon…
Stars
Stars and constellations are expected to be a big interior design hit in 2019, both in our home accessory choices and on our walls. It’s in these celestial designs that we’re likely to see hints of gold and silver, waving goodbye to the much-loved copper trend we’ve all gone crazy for the past couple of years. Think delicate lines, subtle sparkle and a whimsical take on all things cosmic, as we look to the stars for our interior inspiration in 2019.
Monotone rooms
We covered the classic monochrome colour scheme back in September but monotone involves using just one shade throughout a whole room. In 2019 we’re likely to see more homeowners opt for this bold aesthetic. Walls, furnishing and fixtures will blend to create one harmonious, unbroken space that is super on-trend.
We’ve seen this style executed well using dark matte blues and greens, matte greys and light pinks for a more daring look, or in rooms that are used less frequently such as dressing rooms and studies.
Hotel-style bathrooms
The noughties and early 2010s were known for white bathroom suites and beige tiles that were easy to maintain, easy on the eye and easy on the budget. But homeowners now seek a little more luxury in their shower rooms and bathrooms,
They're now treating this space not only as somewhere to wash in the morning, but as an area for relaxing and unwinding in style. Warm, earthy tones, organic woods and matte blacks will feature in our bathroom designs in the coming year, accompanied by plants, artwork and even furniture, for a chic and cosy look.
Scalloped tiling
Move aside subway tiles! Scalloped tiling is moving into the interior trend spotlight for 2019. Art Deco-inspired and more interesting on the eye than square-edged metro tiles, these scaly designs are sure to make a splash in your bathroom upgrade in the coming year. More experimental in shape and style than rectangular tiles, scalloped tiling is best used in one area in the bathroom or in small sections, as it can look quite heavy on the eye if the room is tiled throughout.
Natural leathers
One day shiny black leather sofas will make a comeback, but it definitely won’t be in 2019. This year’s leather look is all about tan shades for a more natural, organic almost wood-like feel.
Worn-look leather sofas in the living room, tan dining chairs and even leather-clad beds will be a popular choice in 2019. In the rest of the home we’ll see plenty of leather accents in kitchen cabinet handles, storage boxes and even coffee tables.
Oversized print wallpaper
While patterned wallpaper has enjoyed a revival in recent years, interior design trends are stepping away from small, repetitive patterns towards large scenery prints that are almost like a large piece of art. Hot off the back of the tropical trend, leaf and bird designs will be very much ‘in vogue’ in 2019. But expect to see muted tones for a more sophisticated finish rather than an explosion of super-bright colours.
Concrete
An interior trend set to take 2019’s home design world by storm is concrete. While some homeowners are already pushing the interior design envelope with the use of concrete in their homes, mainstream interior design is yet to jump on the concrete bandwagon.
We think 2019 will be the year for this robust, industrial material, which now comes in different forms for domestic settings, such as microcement and micro concrete. Not only is concrete a hardwearing, long-lasting material, but it looks great when paired with the right colour schemes and fixtures.
